Has Modern Technology Made People’s Lives Better or Worse?
Many of these points will contradict one another, but that just shows that many things out there have both good and bad effects on society, just depends on how you look at it, and how you let it affect you.
Positive Effects (Has Made Lives Better)
1. People can buy almost anything from the comfort of there own home.
- This allows people with no form of transportation to live a pretty normal life
- Physically (and Mentally) disabled people can also buy items online, or have a friend or relative buy it from their house, and have it shipped to the disabled person's house.
2. Medical Advancements
3. Provides easy, fast and fun ways to communicate with people, as well as cost effective ways of talking to people who live long distances from each other.

4. Businesses can be/are more productive
5. Many forms of entertainment, and ways to make it easier to enjoy.
- Games, Music, Pictures, Movies, and more
- Tivo, Ipod, Portable DVD Players, Portable Gaming Devices, Home Theater Systems
6. People can help each other.
- People can chat in chat rooms about how to fix a certain problem (Example – computer trouble, other electronics, house repairs, etc)
- Offers people with different medical problems to talk to others with the same medical problem, and Therefore exchanging thoughts and idea's about what to do and how to feel better, also depressed people have a huge support group at their fingertips, many times suicidal people have been saved (3 times that I know personally, and my life and outlook on life has been saved by a few people online, and support websites) by talking to someone online, and theres some reasons why talking online is better than in person.
7. Gives people access to a lot of information, in seconds, without having to find and read a book
- In the time it would take you to do research from just one book, you could read 3 to 5 different articles off of google
- Encourges kids to learn, kids like computers, they would rather read something on a computer, than in a book, not to mention they can also watch video's on the subject, as well as see hundreds of photo's, compared to maybe 5 to 20 in a book
8. Gives people more free time.
- Dishwasher
- Microwave
- Romba
- Washing Machine & Dryer (idk how many people still wash there clothes by hand, unless your really poor, but for most people they use a washer and dryer, either at home, or a laundry mat, still I had to put this though, and for the people that wash and dry their clothes at home, that gives them more free time over people that have to drive and wait at a laundry mat)
9. Has made people safer, and protected there belongings.
- Home Security Systems
- Car Alarms (and GPS tracking to find a stolen car)
- GPS tracking systems on criminals
- Imbedded GPS chips in dogs
- Onstar
- Cell phones, by having a cell phone with you at all times, no matter where you are, if something happens to you or someone else, you can call someone or 911, Therefore saving your's or another person's life. Also by using the E911 feature on most modern cell phones, parents can track the location of their child, so if that child ever runs away, or is kidnapped you will have a much greater chance of finding them.
10. A lot easier for someone to start their own business.
– Ebay
- Amazon.com Marketplace
- Zazzle.com
- Cafepress.com

- IPTV, Podcasts, Professional blogging
Negative Effects (Has Made Lives Worse)
1. Less communication with people in person, making the world anti-social.
-People rarely talk face to face anymore, but instead over the computer via myspace, im clients, or email.
- People put on their headphones and go into their own little world and block out people.
2. Has made it easier to invade someone's privacy.
- Also has made it easier for companies to spy on you
3. Has made it easier to steal someone's credit card information.
4. Has made it easier to steal someone's identidy.
5. Makes it easy for criminals/terrorists to access sensitive goverment information.
6. Makes it easier for stalkers, murders, rapists, and child molesters to find who they are looking for.
- Social Networking Sites (Such As Myspace, Xanga, Friendster, Facebook, Hi5, Etc)
- Chat Rooms
- Picture Sharing Websites (Such As Flickr, Photobucket, Ofoto, Etc)
7. Makes it easier for criminals/terrorists to execute their plans.
8. Allows companys to obtain to much control over consumer products.
– Copyright protection, Hardware DRM, Software DRM
9. Has taken away most people's free time/alone time/creative time.
– Doesn't allow the brain time to gather and organize your thoughts, some people say computers, and other electronic devices are the cause of adhd, and actually I would almost have to agree with them at this point. It all started with the television though.
- You see less creative pieces of work, such as art, you don't see that many paintings anymore that have taken weeks, months, and sometimes years to make, b/c no-one has time for that anymore.
- If I didn't have a computer and a tv, I would get easily 8 to 12 more hours of free time in a day, for others obviously it will be different, but still for most people you are still talking 3 to 5 extra hours
10. Has made people lazy.
– Remotes
- Spellcheck
- Not reading books
- Ab-Belts
- Diet Pills (some medical advancements are bad in ways)
- TV dinners (the microwave is the technology here)
- The Romba
- Treadmills (yea hate to say it, but now many people don't run outdoors anymore, which is a much healthier thing to do)
- People are more inclined to stay inside there house, b/c they will be kept entertained and busy by one form of technology or another, Therefore they are not outside playing sports (making people fat as well), or getting enough fresh air or sun (making people sick, staying indoors to much is really bad for your health. The air indoors on average is 2 to 5 times worse than the air outdoors, in some cases the air indoors can be up to 100 times worse, this has been proven many times by the E.P.A since their first study about this matter in 1997. You are also closer to one another, and therefore more likely to catch something that becomes airborne)
11. Some technologies have put people out of work.
- Best example would be different kinds of robots (not so much in the u.s yet), but in Japan for example, many security guards were laid off b/c they were replaced with robot security guards.
12. People are more inclined to spend all their hard earned money, most the time not wisely either.
– Ebay (lol)
- Online deals
- Special online financing promotions
- Access to so many different items all in your house, including many rare items
13. Allows kids easy access to bad stuff.
– Porn
- Violent Games
- Violent Videos
- Bad Words
- Chat rooms containing sensitive subject matters (also putting the child in danger to all sex offenders)
- They can meet and talk to bad people on the internet (and theres plenty)
14. Thousands of dollars of computers can be destoyed by one virus, causing companies to lose a lot of money and sometimes having to lay off their workers.
15. Makes cheatiing a lot easier.
– Cell phones with text messaging
- Bluetooth in ear headsets (answers can be given to the person wearing the headset without the teacher seeing)
– Sidekicks
- Websites such as sparknotes.com, mathnerds.com, also google etc
Wow that was a lot to read but I totally agree with you ecspecially on this one”

I totally agree. I love the outdoors. I wish I was outside right now lol. Lying in a field on a nice chilly day like my birthday, HALLOWEEN, and just relaxing.
